Shortcuts Use Skype for calling all over the world. You'll need an internet connection, and an earphone/microphone combination plugged into your sound card. Calling a telephone in the US, Australia, Europe and Chile is 2 cents a minute from anywhere on the planet. If you call another Skype user, it's free. The sound quality is great, plus you can call 1-800 numbers for free. Yahoo Messenger is another choice, and I believe it is slightly cheaper. For Phone cards, www.2prepaidcard.com works out the best for me in price and quality. No complaints. USAbox.com mail forwarding allows you to have your own postal address in the USA. Good service, and online, you can have them toss mail you don't want, plus you can have a phone number forwarded to you if you wish. Sky Auction - Check it out. Jfax.com - Receive faxes in your email inbox, sign and return, route to a printer or to a fax machine, and store faxes on your PC. hallmark.com - Send handwritten greeting cards to the U.S. very cheap and fast, also flowers, gifts and more. cardsremembered.com is another good choice. The way to handle money when you travel nowadays is not traveler's checks. ATMs are the way to go for the best exchange rate, so before you go, find a bank that doesn't charge international ATM fees. National Interbank, and Affinity Bank fit the bill. Possibly Everbank also, but I have no experience with them. It's also good to have a Paypal.com account to move money around between your bank accounts for free, and apply for their debit card which only charges $1.00 for international ATMs. Don't keep too much in Paypal, even though they pay high interest on whatever is in your account. They have been known to freeze accounts until a dispute is settled. They are not a bank and not FDIC insured. Avoid Bank of America's ATM card with its $5 per ATM usage fee. |
